Minority calls for Anti-Flood Taskforce report to be laid before Parliament

The Minority Caucus in Parliament is calling for the government’s Anti-Flood Taskforce to present its report to the House for scrutiny, following renewed flooding in parts of Accra that have left several communities submerged.

Lawmakers say the worsening situation raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the taskforce, which was established about a year ago to address Ghana’s long-standing urban flooding challenges.

According to the Minority, there has been little visible improvement despite the high-profile launch of the initiative, with flood-prone communities continuing to experience repeated devastation.

A Minority spokesperson noted that the taskforce was presented as a major executive intervention to tackle a national problem, yet the results on the ground remain unchanged.

“Ghanaians funded this task force through their taxes,” the spokesperson said, adding that the public deserves “a transparent account of what it actually did.”

The Minority insists that laying the taskforce’s report before Parliament will ensure accountability and help assess whether its interventions have been effective.

Meanwhile, former Works and Housing Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has attributed the continued flooding challenges to delays in the release of funds for flood mitigation projects, arguing that financing constraints have hampered implementation.

On the other hand, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga urged patience, stating that the task force should be given more time to execute its mandate fully.

“I've read about the special task force that was set up by the President… I'm not sure that this is a problem that can be solved within the one year that I think the task force has been in existence,” he said.

He explained that effective flood management requires extensive studies and fundraising, expressing confidence that the initiative will eventually yield results if given adequate time.
