NPP plans ‘mammoth demonstration’ over alleged political intimidation

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will stage a major nationwide demonstration over what it describes as increasing political harassment and intimidation of its members by state security agencies.

The announcement was made by the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, following the rearrest and remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

Abronye DC was rearrested on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, weeks after he had earlier been granted bail over allegations of misinformation and offensive public statements. He has since been remanded for two weeks pending further investigations.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, Mr. Boakye described the development as part of what he called a growing pattern aimed at silencing government critics.

“We are going to rise; trust me, in the coming days, we are going to stage a mammoth demonstration. We are going to have a series of activities. We can never be intimidated,” he stated.

According to him, the government is allegedly using state institutions to target opposition figures and suppress free speech.

Mr. Boakye also referenced the case of David Essendoh, who he claimed was arrested after posting a billboard image of the President with the inscription “Dumsor is back” on social media.

He alleged that Essendoh was picked up by armed men and moved between security installations without his family initially knowing his whereabouts.

The NPP National Organiser said the party views such incidents as a threat to democratic freedoms and accused the government of focusing on critics instead of addressing pressing national challenges.
