The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has cautioned Ghanaian nationals travelling to, residing in, or transiting through Ethiopia that overstaying will attract fine amounting to over $8,000.
According to the statement, the Ministry outlined that measures are in line with Ethiopia’s Council of Ministers Immigration Amendment Regulation No. 559/2024, which was issued in October 2024.
It stated that travelers who overstay their authorized duration for less than three years will be required to pay a one-time fine of $3,000, in addition to a daily surcharge of $30 for each day of overstay.
For those who remain in the country beyond three years will be required to pay a one-time fine of $5,000, plus the daily surcharge of $30.
The Ministry further noted that travelers who fail to pay the applicable fees may have their properties confiscated and sold to recover the outstanding costs.
"The regulation further provides that where a traveler is unable or unwilling to pay the applicable penalties, the Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Services may confiscate and sell the traveler's properties or belongings in order to recover the cost involved," the statement read.
The Ministry urged Ghanaian travelers to ensure strict compliance with immigration rules in Ethiopia to avoid sanctions.
They advised Ghanaians currently in Ethiopia to remain mindful of local laws and to contact the Ghana Embassy in Addis Ababa via addisababa@mfa.gov.gh
or +251 11 371 1402 for consular assistance when necessary.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and interests of Ghanaian citizens abroad.
