Sports Ministry backs withdrawal of recognition of Ghana Swimming Association

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has thrown its support behind the National Sports Authority’s (NSA) decision to withdraw recognition of the erstwhile Ghana Swimming Association (GSA),

The Ministry maintained that the action is lawful and remains in force.

According to the statement, the Ministry's attention was drawn to an alleged notice issued by the General Secretary of the former GSA announcing a virtual elective congress scheduled on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

It also noted that it is aware of correspondence from the association regarding the selection of swimmers for the upcoming African Aquatics Swimming Championships in Algeria.

Following these developments, the Ministry disclosed that it has received multiple petitions from a majority of stakeholders within the Ghanaian swimming fraternity, calling for an election to restore order.

"The Ministry hereby discloses and acknowledges receipt of numerous petitions from a majority of the Ghanaian Swimming Clubs and organised stakeholders of the Ghanaian swimming fraternity calling for free and fair elections in accordance with the GSA Constitution," part of the statement read.

It stressed that neither the Ministry nor the NSA will recognize any congress by the erstwhile GSA that violates its constitution with authority.

"The Ministry said the former GSA executive is prohibited from organising any aquatics competition, including the upcoming African Aquatics Swimming Championships.

"The GSA and its Executive Council cannot represent or organise the representation of Ghana at any aquatics competitions, whether local or international.

"The GSA cannot engage in or supervise the selection of Ghana representatives to any swimming competitions, including, for the avoidance of doubt, the upcoming African Aquatics Swimming Championships," the Ministry warned.

The Ministry, in collaboration with the NSA, has demanded accountability from the former leadership, particularly the submission of audited accounts, which the GSA claims to have submitted to World Aquatics.

The statement emphasized that the call for World Aquatics to appoint a Stabilization Committee to oversee Ghana’s aquatics and conduct credible elections is backed by the constitution, adding that if World Aquatics does not respond in the coming days, the NSA will set up an Interim Committee.
