The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has announced a ban on drumming and general noise-making in the Ga Traditional Area, running from Monday, May 4 to Thursday, June 4, 2026.
In a public notice on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Assembly said the measure introduced together with the Ga Traditional Council is meant to maintain peace, unity, and security during the customary period leading up to the Homowo Festival.
As part of the rules, churches are expected to keep all activities strictly within their premises and are not allowed to use musical instruments during the entire period.
The AMA also directed that loudspeakers should not be placed outside churches, mosques, or pubs, and it suspended roadside evangelism.
"Religious groups and traditional authorities are urged to encourage respect among different faiths and to discourage followers from making inflammatory or insulting statements about other beliefs and practices," It stated.
It added that funeral rites and related activities have been prohibited in keeping with Ga customary practices.
The Assembly noted that enforcement will be handled only by an authorised task force consisting of AMA officials, personnel from the Ghana Police Service, and representatives of the traditional councils.
It further warned that no individual or group outside that arrangement should attempt to enforce the directive.
Residents were called on to cooperate fully to help ensure a peaceful “Nmaa Dumo” period.
