The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to replace faded 2026 embossed number plates following quality concerns.
In a statement, the Authority indicated that the exercise will involve a limited batch of the 2026 embossed plates.
According to the DVLA, routine quality checks revealed that some of the plates already issued did not meet its required durability standards.
"Routine quality checks revealed that some plates did not meet the Authority's durability standards, causing the printed characters to fade.
"Once detected, the affected batch was immediately withdrawn from circulation, although some plates had already been issued," the Authority stated.
All affected vehicle owners are encouraged to visit any DVLA office nationwide for a free replacement.
The Authority apologised for the inconvenience caused and accepted full responsibility for the oversight.
DVLA added that measures are being implemented to strengthen quality assurance processes and prevent a recurrence.
The Authority also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and high-quality vehicle registration services.
