President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to establish five maize processing plants in Ghana.
Speaking during his resetting Ghana Tour in the Northern region, he emphasised that the initiative is intended to purchase excess produce for later sale during the lean seasons, as well as buy and process it.
"Government is planning to establish five maize processing plants factories, so one solution is to buy the excess produce and sell it later during the lean seasons, the other solution is to buy it and process it," he stated.
He stressed that these processing plants will buy all the available maize from farmers and process it for local consumption and exports to other countries.
He noted that there is an export market for corn flour, and that, with Ghana producing excess maize, the country can process part of it and export to generate revenue.
He added that rice mills would also be established in areas where rice is grown extensively, so that the government can buy the entire rice output from farmers, process it for local consumption and exports, and reduce post-harvest losses.
"So like I said with rice, we have one rice mill coming up, there's another rice mill going to be established in Fumbisi, a valley where they grow a lots of rice so that we can buy off all the rice from farmers and process it," he said.
