The Ghana National Gas Company has announced an emergency shutdown of its gas processing plant following a major technical failure, a development that has led to power supply disruptions in parts of the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the company confirmed the complete failure of the Burner Management System (BMS) controller for the Heat Medium System (HMS), describing the fault as critical.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the affected system is severely damaged and will require full replacement, prompting the emergency shutdown of the plant.
The shutdown has resulted in a temporary curtailment of gas supply to thermal power plants, affecting electricity generation and causing intermittent power outages in some areas.
Ghana Gas said a comprehensive technical and safety risk assessment is currently underway to determine the safest and fastest route to restore operations.
A team of engineers has been deployed to work “around the clock” to replace the damaged system and expedite restoration of gas supply.
“Subject to the outcome of ongoing assessments, the plant will commence processes to restore operations in the shortest possible time,” the statement noted.
The company appealed for public patience, expressing regret over the inconvenience caused.
“The public is kindly urged to bear with us during this period of disruption. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding and cooperation,” it said.
Ghana Gas has assured the public of continuous updates as restoration works progress.
