Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has assured that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, known as an anti-LGBTQ+ bill, will be passed by the current Parliament.
He made the remarks at the Kasoa Traditional Leaders and Stakeholders Forum, which brought together community leaders, residents, and government officials to discuss key development issues affecting the municipality.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Bagbin explained that the delay in the bill’s passage into law was due to the former President’s refusal to assent to it after it was approved by the previous Parliament.
According to him, the bill, which sparked intense national debate, was largely driven by public input and reflects the values and concerns expressed by many Ghanaians and traditional authorities.
He stressed that Parliament remains committed to ensuring that the legislation reflects the will of the people, adding that the current composition of the House places it in a stronger position to carry the bill through.
“Be sure, I am there, the law will be passed. The law has been processed because of the conversion of Parliament when the former president declined to assent it.
"When that Parliament ended, it ended with that bill in the hands of the former Parliament,” he stated.
Hon. Bagbin assured that the bill will be passed when Parliament reconvenes, signalling renewed momentum behind one of the most debated pieces of legislation in recent years.
However, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya East, Naa Koryor Okunor, also added that the traditional leaders’ forum organised would go a long way to help bring development to the area.
