The Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) failed to appear before the National Labour Commission for a scheduled meeting to address its ongoing strike action.
The March 11 meeting, which was intended to facilitate dialogue over the industrial action, was attended by government representatives, including officials from the Head of Civil Service and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, but CLOGSAG officials were absent.
Executive Secretary of the Commission, Bernice Welbeck, said the Commission had expected the association to attend but received no explanation for its absence.
She explained that the Commission had earlier directed CLOGSAG to call off the strike and appear before it to address the dispute. However, under labour law, the Commission cannot hear the substantive case while the strike remains in force.
The NLC has therefore declared the strike illegal and rescheduled the meeting to March 18, giving CLOGSAG another opportunity to appear and present its case.
Dr. Welbeck added that even if the dispute is resolved before the next meeting, the association would still be required to appear before the Commission to report on the outcome.
