England veteran Kyle Walker has confirmed his retirement from international football, just three months before the Three Lions are set to kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The Burnley defender, who earned 95 caps and scored one goal during a distinguished international career, announced his decision on Tuesday, March 10.
Walker's departure creates a significant void in Thomas Tuchel’s squad as England prepares for a challenging Group L, which includes Croatia, Panama, and a highly anticipated showdown with Ghana’s Black Stars in North America.
Having been a mainstay in the national side for more than a decade, Walker bows out after an illustrious career. In a statement released on Tuesday, the 35-year-old expressed that representing his country has been the pinnacle of his achievements.
"After more than a decade of representing my country, I have decided to retire from international football," Walker said. "Playing for England has always been a great honour in my career, and I will always be proud of it."
Walker also stated his intention to travel to the tournament, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, to support his former teammates from the stands.
"I want to thank all my teammates, coaches, administrators, fans, and everyone who contributed to this journey. The fans' support has been a huge motivation for the team, and I'm looking forward to joining them in supporting the players at the World Cup."
Walker’s exit comes at a pivotal moment for England. Despite being perennial heavyweights, the Three Lions have not lifted the trophy since their solitary triumph against West Germany in 1966.
The 2026 tournament offers a fresh opportunity to end 60 years of disappointment; however, the group stage presents formidable challenges. The clash with Ghana is already being billed as a standout fixture, with the Black Stars keen to exploit a now-vulnerable England defence missing one of its most experienced assets.
The defender concludes his international career with 95 caps and five major tournament appearances, having recently made the move to Burnley FC.
