The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, has closed Royal Nursing College in Kumasi Tafo and arrested two members of the school’s management.
The operation, carried out on Thursday afternoon, February 19, was part of what authorities described as a regulatory enforcement initiative.
According to GTEC officials, preliminary investigations uncovered multiple irregularities, including the running of unaccredited programmes, non-compliance with approved tertiary education standards, and various administrative breaches.
Police officers were deployed to secure the campus while the two management staff were taken into custody to assist with investigations.
Shortly after GTEC's announcement, emotional scenes unfolded on campus as students were seen wailing and expressing shock over the sudden closure of the institution. Some students demanded clarity regarding their academic future, while others broke down in tears.
Abdullah Rashid, a Level 300 General Nursing student, described the incident as devastating. He stated that students were in class when officials arrived to shut down the school.
“We are worried because we don’t know what will happen to us. Some of us are about to complete. We are pleading with the authorities to consider the innocent students,” he appealed.
GTEC has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that measures will be put in place to safeguard the academic progress of affected students.
This closure adds to the growing concerns regarding unlicensed and non-compliant tertiary institutions operating within the country.
Authorities have stated that this action is part of efforts to protect academic standards and maintain integrity within Ghana’s tertiary education sector.
