President John Dramani Mahama has directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to develop measures to prevent the trafficking of narcotics through Ghana’s ports and borders, with a detailed roadmap expected within two weeks.
The directive follows an urgent meeting chaired by President Mahama with security chiefs to review investigations into recent cases involving the trafficking of drugs out of Ghana’s ports.
According to a statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, ten individuals, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), are currently being held as investigations continue.
The meeting also reviewed the security systems and structures currently in place at the country’s ports and other entry points.
The engagement forms part of efforts by the government and security agencies to strengthen Ghana’s border and port security.
