Édouard Mendy has retired from international football after eight years with Senegal, ending a career that included a historic AFCON title.

The 34-year-old Al Ahli goalkeeper confirmed his decision on Saturday in an Instagram video, captioned simply "Thank you, Senegal," featuring highlights from his time with the Teranga Lions. Mendy made his national team debut in 2018 under then-coach Aliou Cissé and went on to earn 59 caps, conceding 34 goals while keeping 31 clean sheets.

His international career peaked in 2021, when Senegal beat Egypt on penalties to win the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, the country's first continental title. Mendy also represented Senegal at two FIFA World Cups, in Qatar in 2022 and at the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Mendy's retirement closes out one of the most decorated individual stretches in Senegalese football. He was named Europe's best goalkeeper for the 2020–21 season, then crowned Best Goalkeeper at the 2021 AFCON, and followed that up in 2022 by winning Best Goalkeeper at the FIFA "The Best" awards. His departure marks the end of an era for a Senegal side that reached its greatest heights during his time between the posts.
