GFA appoints new nechnical team to support Black Stars' 2026 World Cup aspirations

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has revamped its technical team by appointing five elite specialists to assist head coach Otto Addo as the Black Stars gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a strategic move mirroring the successful expansions for previous major tournaments, the GFA has enlisted a diverse mix of international expertise and local experience.

These appointments aim to enhance Ghana’s competitive advantage in coaching, data analysis, and player fitness ahead of a challenging group stage in North America.

At the forefront of the new recruits is French veteran Alain Ravera, who takes on the role of assistant coach. Ravera boasts an impressive résumé, including previous roles with the Guinea national team and Ligue 1 club AS Monaco.

He will be joined by Kim Lars Bjorkegren, who steps up into the senior men's set-up after a fruitful period with the Black Queens. Having led the women's team to a WAFCON bronze medal and secured qualification for 2026, Bjorkegren will fulfil a dual role to bring winning momentum to the technical bench.

To modernise the side's tactical framework, the GFA has engaged with Major League Soccer. Jose Daniel Martínez Alfonso, currently a video analyst with Atlanta United FC, joins as a scout and analyst.

His insights are expected to be crucial as Ghana faces a group featuring the tactical prowess of England and Croatia.

The medical and performance departments have also welcomed high-profile additions to ensure the squad remains in peak condition.

Physiotherapist Carlos Lozano Romero returns, providing continuity after overseeing the squad’s recovery during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

He is joined by British-born Ghanaian performance coach Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi, whose role will focus on conditioning and player optimisation, ensuring the squad can endure the high-intensity climate and considerable travel demands of a tournament spread across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

These temporary appointments are specifically designed for the 2026 cycle, with Ghana drawn into a challenging group alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.

Following a disappointing early exit in Qatar, the GFA is committed to leaving nothing to chance in their preparations.

The ambition is clear: to rekindle the spirit of the 2010 South Africa tournament and surpass that memorable quarter-final finish.

This newly configured backroom staff will integrate immediately with Otto Addo’s existing team to commence final preparations for the global spectacle.
