Ghanaian football enthusiasts aspiring to support the Black Stars in the 2026 FIFA World Cup have received a stark reminder: holding a match ticket does not equate to having a visa.
As anticipation grows for the expanded tournament featuring 48 teams across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, immigration specialists are urging supporters to prioritise their paperwork alongside their football plans.
Marie Keita Amarteifio, a regulated Canadian immigration consultant, cautioned that many fans could face disappointment, and potential financial loss, if they presume that obtaining entry is straightforward.
"Simply having a match ticket or accommodation booking does not guarantee approval," Amarteifio stated in an interview with Citi Sports. "Each applicant must independently satisfy the visitor visa requirements."
While the Black Stars gear up to face Austria in their March friendly to refine their squad, fans must embark on their own thorough "pre-season" preparations.
According to Amarteifio, immigration officers will examine applications based on individual circumstances rather than enthusiasm for football.
To secure a visa, applicants are required to demonstrate strong connections to Ghana. This includes providing evidence of stable employment, familial obligations, or property ownership that indicates their intent to return home.
Additionally, travellers must present substantial financial resources, offering clear documentation of funds sufficient to cover flights, accommodation, and daily expenses.
Moreover, every fan must submit a credible, well-organised travel itinerary, along with a valid passport and impeccable supporting documents.
The visa application process often lures dishonest "agents" who claim to guarantee entry. Amarteifio’s advice is straightforward: avoid them.
With the tournament set to attract a record number of visitors to North America, the consultant underscores the importance of applying early.
A last-minute rush can often lead to mistakes, and in immigration, a simple oversight can result in immediate denial.
On the field, Ghana aims to erase the memories of their group-stage exit in Qatar 2022.
The upcoming match against Austria signifies the start of a rigorous training period for the team.
However, for the "12th man" cheering from the stands, the toughest challenge may occur at the consulate well before the first whistle blows in North America.
