Spain defeated Argentina to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy, with substitute Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in extra time to deliver La Roja their second global title.

Torres struck in the 106th minute after reacting quickest to a rebound, breaking the deadlock in a tightly contested final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, before more than 80,000 spectators.

The victory marked Spain’s first World Cup triumph since their 2010 success in South Africa and completed a historic campaign in which the European champions dominated possession, controlled the tempo and repeatedly tested Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.

Martínez produced several outstanding saves to keep the defending champions in the match, but Argentina struggled to create clear opportunities against Spain’s disciplined defence. Lionel Messi and his teammates failed to record a shot on or off target during the opening 115 minutes of the final.

Argentina’s hopes suffered another setback when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off deep into second-half stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card, forcing Lionel Scaloni’s side to play extra time with 10 men.

Spain continued to apply pressure after the interval, with substitutes including Nico Williams and Mikel Merino adding fresh attacking energy. Martínez denied several attempts, including a late header from Williams, before Torres finally found the breakthrough.
