The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested William Opoku, popularly known as “Father Blessing,” alleged to be the leader of a car-snatching syndicate operating across Kumasi and surrounding areas.
He was arrested at Ahwiaa in the Kwabre East Municipality after police tracked suspected gang hideouts at Ahwiaa and Pankrono.
Police say he confessed to multiple vehicle thefts, including Toyota Corolla robberies along the Anwiankwanta–Asanso road, Moro Market, Pankrono, and Anloga Junction, and later led officers to recover a stolen white Toyota Corolla at a mechanic’s workshop.
Opoku also allegedly admitted involvement in a 2025 attack on a police officer at Kronum Brokutu, during which an AK-47 rifle and ammunition were stolen, and named several accomplices, including Suley alias “Shangu Spirit” and Bonkro alias “Okoronko.”
In a follow-up operation on June 17, 2026, police encountered three suspects on an unregistered motorbike who allegedly resisted arrest and opened fire.
Police returned fire, killing Suley and Bonkro, while one suspect escaped. The deceased were later pronounced dead at the Bekwai Municipal Hospital.
