Three people have been confirmed dead and nine others injured following a fresh gun attack on Odomi in the Nkwanta South Municipality, intensifying concerns over the worsening security situation in the area.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening when unidentified armed men reportedly stormed the community, unleashing gunfire that left residents in panic and chaos amid long-standing tensions.
Victims were rushed to the Nkwanta St. Joseph Catholic Hospital for emergency treatment. Medical reports confirmed that one person died while on admission, while two others were brought in already deceased after being attacked on their farms.
Security agencies, supported by military personnel, have since intensified patrols in the area as investigations continue to identify the perpetrators and restore calm.
The latest violence comes just days after renewed peace advocacy efforts in the region, including a passionate appeal by Nana Kwabena Ntow, Chairman of the Oti Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association.
During a peace engagement organised by the Oti Regional House of Chiefs at the Oti Regional Coordinating Council (ORCC) Conference Hall in Dambai, Nana Ntow knelt before chiefs and ethnic leaders to plead for an end to the recurring violence in the municipality.
He urged all parties involved in the conflict to embrace dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful coexistence, warning that journalists were increasingly burdened by continuous reporting of deaths, injuries, and destruction.
“Journalists are tired of reporting incidents of violence, injuries and loss of lives. We appeal to all parties to allow peace to prevail so that Nkwanta South can return to normalcy and pursue its development agenda,” he said.
The Nkwanta South area has been grappling with recurring violence involving ethnic tensions that have led to deaths, displacement, and destruction of property over time, undermining socio-economic development.
Just a week before the latest attack, the Oti Regional House of Chiefs announced a seven-member committee tasked with engaging stakeholders and finding lasting solutions to the conflict. The committee is yet to be inaugurated.
The renewed attack has therefore deepened fears among residents, even as peacebuilding efforts continue alongside intensified security operations.
