Kwakye Ofosu disputes claims President Mahama raised presidency staff salaries

Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has denied reports that President John Dramani Mahama raised salaries for staff at the Presidency, saying the prevailing pay structure was established under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, June 15, 2026, he addressed claims that the Mahama administration had approved higher emoluments for presidential staff and other Article 71 officeholders.

He explained that, under the Constitution, the President must appoint a committee to review and recommend salaries and conditions for Article 71 holders, stressing that the president has not done that; therefore, the salaries for those serving under President Mahama were determined by the NPP administration.

“For the avoidance of doubt, President Mahama has not set up any committee to look at the emoluments or conditions of Article 71 holders,” he said.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu noted that the committee’s recommendations were completed and approved before the change of government, and that the presidency is required to submit the report to Parliament for approval, a step he said occurred in January 2025 after being submitted by President Akufo-Addo.

He emphasised that since no fresh review has been initiated under President Mahama, the existing salary levels remain in effect.
