The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the Ghana Police Service to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the death of Ms. Innocentia Avinu, a Level 200 student whose body was found this week at Hutchland beach near the UCC campus.
In a statement signed by Press Secretary to the Minister, Hashmin Mohammed, the Ministry expressed deep sorrow over the student’s death and stressed that the government is committed to ensuring a thorough inquiry and urged the public to allow investigators to do their work without interference.
"The Honourable Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the authority of the University of Cape Coast to collaborate closely with the Ghana Police Service to commence a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death," it stated.
Ms. Avinu had been reported missing several days before her dead body was discovered.
Police and university officials have not yet released further details about the ongoing investigation or identified any suspects. Authorities said they will provide updates as the probe progresses.
Community leaders and student groups at UCC have demanded swift action and called for enhanced safety measures on and around campus while investigators continue their work.
The ministry extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and the university community.
