Three people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a fatal road crash on the Bolgatanga–Zebilla–Bawku Highway near Saka in the Upper East Region.

The accident occurred on the busy highway that links Bolgatanga, Zebilla and Bawku, a major transport corridor in the region that sees frequent long‑distance travel.

According to reports, the collision involved a VVIP bus travelling from Accra to Bawku and a Toyota Sienta heading in the opposite direction from Bawku towards Bolgatanga.

The impact was severe, resulting in the immediate deaths of three occupants, including the driver of the smaller vehicle. Several passengers from both vehicles sustained varying injuries.

Emergency responders, including police and rescue teams, were quickly dispatched to the scene to assist victims.

The injured were taken to the Bawku West District Hospital in Zebilla, where they are receiving medical treatment.

The bodies of the deceased were also conveyed to the facility for preservation and identification.

Eyewitnesses said the collision occurred at Saka, a community near Zebilla, an area known for heavy traffic because of inter‑regional movement along the highway.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Factors such as speeding, driver error and road conditions are expected to form part of the inquiry.

At the time of reporting, the identities of some victims had not been officially confirmed, as officials worked to notify families and complete documentation.

The Bolgatanga–Bawku highway has, over the years, recorded several road accidents, prompting concern among residents and road‑safety advocates about driver behaviour and road conditions on the stretch.

Residents in surrounding communities described the latest incident as another painful reminder of the dangers associated with highway travel in the region.

Calls have been made for stricter enforcement of road‑safety regulations, improved monitoring and increased driver awareness to help reduce future crashes.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when travelling at night or in the early morning, when visibility is reduced and road risks are higher.

Survivors of the crash are continuing to receive treatment while medical personnel monitor their conditions at the hospital.

As investigations continue, transport and security officials are expected to assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and recommend measures to improve safety on the highway.

The incident adds to ongoing national concerns about road safety and the need for stronger compliance with traffic regulations across major roads in Ghana.
