Interior minister takes delivery of illegal firearms seized in anti-galamsey operation

The Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has received a collection of illegal firearms seized by the first batch of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) during its continuing crackdown on illegal mining.

According to reports, the NAIMOS team handed over the weapons to the Ministry on Friday, June 12, 2026, for further processing.

Mr Mubarak praised the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and NAIMOS officers for their dedication and commitment to the fight against illegal mining.

He has subsequently handed the seized firearms to the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons for official documentation, marking, and destruction in accordance with legal requirements.

"I assured the public that all equipment and items seized during anti-galamsey operations, particularly excavators, will be dealt with transparently and in line with established legal procedures," he said.

He confirmed that details of seizures and follow-up actions will be released through official channels to ensure transparency and accountability.

The Minister urged Ghanaians, particularly communities affected by illegal mining, to continue supporting the government and NAIMOS in the campaign against galamsey.

He warned that illegal mining poses serious threats to the environment, water bodies, farmlands, and the health and livelihoods of citizens.

In a message to the newly deployed NAIMOS officers, Mr Mubarak urged them to carry out their duties with "professionalism, integrity, and dedication," stressing that public trust is essential to protecting Ghana's natural resources for future generations.

"Together, we can win the fight against illegal mining and safeguard Ghana's environment for future generations," he said.
