Ghana held to 1-1 draw by Wales in World Cup warm-up

The Black Stars of Ghana were held to a 1-1 friendly draw by Wales on Tuesday, June 2, as Ghana fine-tuned preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Caleb Yirenkyi gave Ghana the lead in the 66th minute, but Louie Koumas struck in stoppage time to level the score at 1-1.

Ghana looked the more threatening side for long spells after Yirenkyi’s opener, which arrived from a well-worked move that saw the forward find space in the penalty area before firing low past the visiting goalkeeper.

The goal was Yirenkyi’s first for the national team and provided a timely confidence boost for the host nation.

Wales, undeterred, gradually clawed their way back into the match and increased the pressure late on.

Their persistence paid off when Koumas reacted quickly to a loose ball in the box during added time, converting to make it 1-1 and deny the Black Stars a late victory.

Both coaches used the friendly to experiment with combinations and assess squad depth ahead of the World Cup.

Ghana’s manager made several substitutions in the second half to test different attacking and midfield options, while Wales also rotated players to evaluate fitness and tactical options.

The draw gives both teams a chance to take positives and work on finishing and defensive concentration ahead of their final pre-tournament preparations.

Ghana will now focus on fine-tuning set-piece routines and closing down in transition before travelling to North America for the World Cup.
