The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ashaiman Constituency, Ernest Norgbey, has urged Ghanaians to act responsibly and put an end to the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into open gutters.
The Member of Parliament emphasised that sanitation is a collective responsibility, warning that filth breeds disease and poses serious public health risks to the community.
Hon. Norgbey made this appeal at the conclusion of a six-day clean-up exercise undertaken in the Ashaiman Municipality. This initiative aligned with a directive from President John Dramani Mahama aimed at improving environmental cleanliness nationwide.
On the final day of the exercise, which took place at the Ashaiman Market, a significant effort was made to desilt choked gutters, resulting in the removal of large volumes of waste from the drains.
Speaking to the media after the exercise, the MP expressed concern about the substantial quantities of garbage retrieved from the gutters. He urged residents to become ambassadors of cleanliness by adopting proper waste disposal practices.
"I am dam surprised that we're seeing these tones of refuse that is coming out just within two months.
"What can we do to savage this situation? Probably we need to sit down once again and look at the modalities, whether there's something that we're not doing right or the community members are not doing right, because we can't continue and live in a filthy environment.
"It creates ill health, cholera, and others. If human beings are living here, selling here, and looking at these tones of garbage that we're getting out here, then we're at risk.
"Let me take this opportunity to advise the residents that cleanliness is next to godliness, and so we should be very careful how we dissipate our refuse. We should be very careful how we dump refuse in any gutter that we see," he said.
