The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to reintroduce Town Councils as part of renewed efforts to strengthen sanitation enforcement and improve cleanliness across the capital.
The initiative is designed to ensure stricter compliance with sanitation by-laws among residents and business operators, with enforcement measures expected to intensify from Monday.
Speaking during the National Sanitation Day exercise in Accra on Saturday, May 2, the Accra Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, said while many shop owners have participated in clean-up activities and complied with directives, sustained effort is required to maintain a cleaner city.
“This exercise is encouraging, but sanitation must be continuous and not something we do occasionally,” he stated.
He warned that individuals and businesses that fail to adhere to sanitation regulations will face sanctions, including fines, as enforcement is stepped up.
Also addressing the event, the Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey, Alfred Allotey-Gaisie, urged traders and shop owners to strictly comply with sanitation by-laws, stressing that enforcement would be key to achieving long-term cleanliness.
“Full compliance is key to achieving a cleaner and healthier city, and enforcement will be critical going forward,” he said.
The reintroduction of Town Councils is expected to improve local monitoring systems, enhance community participation, and ensure sustained sanitation practices across the capital.
