AMA cracks down on unauthorised mechanics, abandoned vehicles at Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has taken action against unauthorised mechanic activities and abandoned vehicles at the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, as part of efforts to improve the city's image and traffic flow.

The exercise, led by Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, involved towing abandoned vehicles and removing those parked indiscriminately along the Hyundai showroom frontage.

Mechanics were directed to relocate and warned against using the area as an unauthorised workshop.

The AMA's ongoing decongestion drive aims to reclaim public spaces, improve road safety, and reduce traffic congestion.

The Mayor cautioned mechanics against operating on roads, pavements, and business frontages, emphasizing the need for attractive and accessible spaces for customers and investors.

Mr. Allotey stressed that while mechanics are vital to the local economy, their operations must be carried out in designated areas, not on roadsides or in front of legitimate businesses.

"The city must work for everybody. We cannot allow a few people to take over public spaces, damage the roads, create congestion and prevent others from doing legitimate business," he stated.

The exercise will be replicated across the metropolis, with warnings for mechanics and vehicle owners to relocate voluntarily.

The Mayor appealed to vehicle owners to avoid abandoning vehicles on roadsides, warning of towing and surcharges.

The AMA will collaborate with security agencies to ensure roads and public spaces are used for their intended purposes.
