The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng (A-Plus), has promised Gomoa Central to create waterfalls to promote tourism and boost the annual Easter carnival.
In his remarks at the Gomoa Easter Carnival in Gomoa Akwamkrom, he stressed that, the waterfalls will be accomplished by next year’s Gomoa Easter Carnival and will create a tourist attraction to strengthen the festival.
He emphasised that tourism generates substantial revenue for surrounding communities and the country when natural sites are commercialised, helping to transform the local economy.
"One major natural resources the Central region have is common sense and we should use it to do something good for ourselves by creating things, that's why I am saying that the next Gomoa Easter Carnival, when you come you will see that we have created water falls here, so many water falls in abroad is artificial so we will create one here by next year," he stated.
A-Plus noted that no country has developed without involving traditional authorities and urged that chiefs and kings be included in decision-making.
He said people often listen to chiefs more readily than to politicians, so their involvement is necessary for effective governance.
He called on the chiefs to unite to help develop the Gomoa Traditional Area, the Central Region and the country as a whole.
He also appealed to chiefs and young people to support his efforts to bring development to the area and to create jobs for youth, saying the Central Region is endowed with land and sea but has been neglected in terms of development.
A-Plus disclosed that he has asked President Mahama to build a seaport in the Central Region and to designate the area as a free zone; saying the president has agreed in principle.
"I told the president that we have to build a port in Central region, some people came and told the president that we want to build a port in Tema but the president said go to the Central region, it means that the president has it in mind to do it, he has decided to help us," he said.
He further assured that the waterfalls, seaport and free-zone status are intended to stimulate tourism and commerce and to create employment opportunities for local youths if delivered.
