The Member of Parliament for Shai-Osudoku constituency, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has announced that GHC 292.4 million has been earmarked in the 2026 budget to sustain the Free Sanitary Pad distribution programme.
Speaking to the media, she emphasised that the initiative aims to eliminate financial barriers, reduce period poverty and ensure that girls remain healthy during their menstrual periods.
She said the government had demonstrated a bold commitment to menstrual health by distributing over six million sanitary pads to girls in basic and secondary schools in 2025 and by allocating GHC 292.4 million in the 2026 budget to sustain free nationwide distribution.
She highlighted that the distribution will benefit more than 1,000 girls across 17 schools and institutions in the Greater Accra Region.
She asserted that this forms part of the government’s efforts to expand access to menstrual hygiene products and fight period poverty in vulnerable communities.
She assured that the government will continue to collaborate with government agencies and partners to ensure transparency, effective monitoring and public awareness.
