Couple arrested for allegedly beheading their 3-day-old baby for money rituals

A couple has been arrested at Awutu Bontrase in the Awutu Senya West District for allegedly beheading their three-day-old baby boy and disposing of the body in a refuse dump.

According to reports, the baby's body was discovered with its head and left hand severed. Local residents initiated a search after the grim discovery, leading them to a 24-year-old woman, Abena Benewa, who reportedly gave birth at home. A traditional birth attendant informed her that the baby was deceased.

Preparations were underway for a burial when the baby's father, 26-year-old Bright Ashiao, claimed he would conduct the burial himself. However, during further interrogation, it was revealed that he buried the baby in the same location where the body was ultimately found.

Community members have alleged that the couple may have planned to use their child for money rituals, although police have yet to confirm these suspicions.

The Assemblyman for the Bontrase Electoral Area, Prince Larbie, has expressed concern over the increasing involvement of youth in money rituals and other criminal activities.

"When the guy was caught yesterday, he stated that the lady (his wife) got pregnant and delivered at a traditional birth attendant's place here in Bontrase. After the delivery, they were informed that the baby was dead," Larbie explained.

"He then went to purchase a casket, claiming to bury the baby where refuse is dumped. Upon inspection, it was evident that the body did not appear to have been buried; the baby looked fresh, with one hand and the head chopped off."

Once the situation was reported, the elders in the area were alerted, and a local police leader was contacted, who referred the case to Bireku. "When you look closely, this is what is happening in the area; the youth are engaging in money rituals," Larbie added.

"The general belief is that the husband has used the newborn for money rituals. The woman remains silent, seemingly in shock, unaware of how to respond. In summary, it appears that the man has resorted to using his new baby boy for money rituals."

Furthermore, the Awutu Beraku District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, confirmed that the suspects are currently in police custody and will appear before the court shortly.
