Accra Mayor announces 29 mew markets under 24 hour Initiative; Salaga market 85% complete

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly is constructing 29 new markets under the 24-hour Market initiative.

Mr. Allotey explained that existing markets lack sufficient space; however, measures are being implemented to address the severe congestion in market areas.

He affirmed his commitment to the Salaga market, stating that it is currently 85% complete, with roofing and doors already in place.

He further indicated that the overcrowding in Accra’s markets has prompted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to introduce the 29-market project to create more space for business activities.

“Funds have been provided for us to build the 29 market project across Accra from our Excellency John Dramani Mahama,” Kpakpo highlighted during an interview on Woezor TV.

According to Mr. Allotey, the locations for the 29 markets include Agbobloshie, Tema, Ashiaman, GA West, GA East, Ayawaso Central, and Krobo. He stated that the project is expected to be completed within a year.

The Mayor revealed that construction commenced on Monday, February 23, 2026, and assured that the completed markets will accommodate between 700 to 800 people.

In his concluding remarks, he assured the public that the Salaga market will be completed by the end of March, allowing vendors to benefit from the additional space.
