''Detention of Kofi Ofosu Nkansah politically motivated'' – Baffour Awuah

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Lawyer for former National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) Chief Executive Officer, Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has described his client’s detention as unnecessary and politically motivated, insisting that the offence levelled against him is bailable under Ghanaian law.Ghanaian cultural products

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, February 11, Baffour Awuah argued that no offence in the country is non-bailable, regardless of the allegations involved, questioning why the detention of his client after a charge had already been preferred.

According to the lawyer, the substance of the case appears limited, as the charge of publishing false news is largely tied to comments made during a radio discussion and a video recording from the television station.

He therefore challenged the material basis for the decision to hold his client, suggesting it raises concerns about the exercise of state power.

“It is also a matter of public knowledge that on Thursday, immediately after Kofi voluntarily reported to the NIB, an operative of this government had put out on social media that Kofi had been picked up by operatives of the National Investigations Bureau, which was not true.

“So what kind of discussions went on for him to put out such information, and what was the expectation of the system at the BNI when Kofi was invited? These are very legitimate questions that lead to the conclusion that this whole matter is politically motivated,” he said.

Kofi Nkansah is expected to appear before the court on Thursday, February 12, 2026, after being formally charged by the NIB with publishing false news. The charge stems from allegations he made on Sompa 106.5 FM regarding improprieties in the award of overseas scholarships, which prompted a directive from President John Dramani Mahama for investigations to be conducted.
