Labadi Beach redevelopment plans target tourism growth and jobs

By: Emmanuel Bekoe

The proposed redevelopment of the Labadi beachfront is expected to transform the area into a modern tourism and leisure destination while preserving public access to the beach.

The project, linked to efforts by Labadi Beach Hotel and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to address longstanding encroachment, is expected to introduce restaurants, beach lounges, landscaped spaces, live music, wellness facilities, water sports and retail outlets.

According to the background provided, the hotel had struggled to expand its facilities because of encroachment on the beachfront. Attempts to secure the area were unsuccessful, leading management to seek SSNIT’s support. The Trust subsequently engaged National Security to help address the situation.

The encroachment reportedly created sanitation and waste management concerns, security risks for guests and visitors, and reports of inappropriate and illicit activities in the vicinity. These conditions, the background document said, undermined the ambience, safety and standards expected of a five-star hospitality establishment.

A committee involving relevant stakeholders has since been established to review outstanding issues, agree on the necessary arrangements and coordinate the next steps. The project is expected to begin after stakeholder engagement, with an initial focus on cleaning and restoring the area to a safer, more attractive and properly managed environment.

The proposed development is intended to combine hospitality, recreation and entertainment in a coastal setting for local and international visitors. It is envisioned as a place where people can dine, socialise, relax and enjoy the natural environment of Labadi Beach.

Beyond tourism, the redevelopment could create employment and business opportunities for residents of La and surrounding communities through the provision of goods and services, local enterprise and participation in the wider tourism value chain.

However, meaningful consultation with chiefs, traditional authorities, community leaders and residents will be important in addressing concerns over livelihoods, employment, environmental protection, public access and the future use of the beachfront. Community participation is expected to help ensure that local residents benefit from the project.

SSNIT’s involvement is tied to its responsibility to protect and manage assets held in trust for contributors and pensioners. The Trust maintains that safeguarding its investments against unauthorised occupation and ensuring their long-term value are essential to its mandate of administering Ghana’s Basic National Social Security Scheme.

SSNIT has assured the public that the beachfront will remain accessible as a public beach. The success of the redevelopment will therefore depend not only on its tourism and commercial ambitions but also on how effectively it protects public access, addresses community concerns and delivers economic benefits to surrounding residents.
