Bawumia vows to save thousands of jobs after La Beach demolition

By: Ernest Okanta

Leader and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to protect and improve the thousands of jobs supported by the La Beach economy following the demolition of the beach.

“I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia described the demolition as “painful”, citing the beach’s significant social, economic and cultural importance to the people of La and Ghana as a whole.

“It’s sad that this very significant enclave has been demolished so wantonly,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

In a statement issued by the flagbearer on Saturday, October 3, 2026, he noted that La Beach is one of Ghana’s most vibrant beach resorts and a major source of livelihood, particularly for the youth.

According to him, the beach has also hosted several international functions and played an important role during the NPP government’s “year of return” activities.

He also expressed concern over the destruction of movable assets belonging to businesses at the beach, noting that the items could have been removed by their owners.

As part of his proposed plans, Dr. Bawumia said he would rebuild the beach economy and issue leases to businesses operating there.

He also pledged to redesign the space to meet required standards and support operators to run their businesses.

Dr. Bawumia further said he would secure space for the Labadi Beach Hotel and other operators while allowing smaller businesses to coexist and contribute to the beach ecosystem.

He promised to engage the owners of Laboma Beach to resolve their concerns and work with them to establish their businesses and comply with the law.

According to him, efforts would also be made to address flooding and environmental concerns around the lagoon.

He reiterated his commitment to making La Beach a major tourism and economic hub while protecting the livelihoods it supports.
