The Adenta Circuit Court has granted Senior Nursing Officer Salomey Awiti Baffoe GH¢100,000 bail after weeks in custody over an alleged false news publication case.
The court granted the bail with two sureties, both of whom must be civil servants earning a monthly salary of not less than GH¢3,000. Baffoe was represented by lawyer and Manhyia South MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, who welcomed the decision.
Baffoe is facing a charge of abetment of crime in connection with allegations that she assisted the operator of the “Ghana Jollof” TikTok account, Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, in the publication and circulation of false news. She has pleaded not guilty.
The case has attracted significant attention since Baffoe, a 40-year-old Senior Nursing Officer from Techiman, was arrested on September 13, 2026. Reports indicated that persons who identified themselves as National Security operatives went to her residence at Hansua, near Techiman, around 11:30 p.m. and took her away.
The prosecution has maintained that Baffoe was required to remain in custody to assist with ongoing investigations, including efforts to trace the second accused person. Police have also alleged that the case involves cyber-related evidence.
On September 24, the Accra High Court rejected Baffoe’s earlier bail application. The court cited the risk of interference with electronic evidence and the potential to hamper ongoing investigations, while directing the Republic to expedite its work. It stressed that the refusal of bail did not amount to a finding of guilt.
Her lawyer subsequently indicated that the defence intended to challenge the High Court’s decision and seek an expedited hearing, while raising concerns about the effect of Baffoe’s continued detention on her three children.
The case was later adjourned to October 5 after the court could not sit on September 30 because of the Association of Judges and Magistrates Conference. The adjournment meant Baffoe remained in custody until the court’s latest sitting.
The prosecution’s allegations regarding Baffoe’s role in the “Ghana Jollof” account remain contested. Her lawyer has previously denied claims that she received money from the account’s operator to recruit people or support the publication of online content.
With the latest ruling, Baffoe is to be released on the GH¢100,000 bail subject to the court’s conditions, while the substantive criminal case continues. The allegations against her have not been proven in court.
