The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) says it will redevelop the Labadi-La Palm beachfront into a properly planned tourism destination while creating wider economic opportunities.
The redevelopment will cover the beachfront adjoining Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach, following the clearance of unauthorised structures from the area.
SSNIT said the exercise marks the beginning of a broader effort to protect and develop the enclave as a major tourism and hospitality destination.
The Trust said the redevelopment is expected to position the beachfront as one of Ghana’s key tourism destinations and a potential tourism hub in West Africa.
SSNIT acknowledged that people have operated businesses and built livelihoods around the beachfront over the years.
However, it said the objective is not simply to take away livelihoods but to establish a better-organised tourism environment capable of generating more sustainable and broader economic opportunities.
Young people from Labadi and surrounding communities are expected to be considered for employment opportunities created through the development and subsequent operations, subject to relevant recruitment requirements.
The opportunities are expected to span construction, hospitality, tourism, food services, entertainment, security, cleaning, maintenance, transportation and related activities.
SSNIT said the assets being protected and redeveloped form part of its investment portfolio and ultimately belong to workers and pensioners whose contributions underpin the Scheme.
The Trust said its responsibility is to protect, manage and develop these assets to generate sustainable returns for its members.
It said the redevelopment therefore has both tourism and investment objectives: contributing to Ghana’s tourism economy while enhancing the value of an important SSNIT investment asset.
SSNIT also said it will continue engaging chiefs, traditional authorities, community leaders and residents of Labadi throughout the various stages of the redevelopment.
According to the Trust, the engagements will allow it to provide information on the plans, listen to concerns, identify opportunities for local participation and ensure that the community understands and can benefit from the development.
The redevelopment is expected to commence this month, with SSNIT stressing that the beachfront will remain a public beach.
The project will also focus on restoring the area as a cleaner, safer and properly managed environment, with attention to environmental management, sanitation, security, accessibility and the overall visitor experience.
SSNIT said its ultimate objective is to transform the area into an asset that works better for visitors, the surrounding community, Ghana’s tourism industry and, importantly, the members whose contributions underpin the Scheme.
