Aggrieved teachers demand action on 2012–2015 legacy arrears

By: Emmanuel Bekoe

The Association of Aggrieved Teachers of Legacy Arrears 2012–2015 has called on teacher unions to include their long-standing unpaid arrears in ongoing negotiations with the government.

The association said it supports the industrial action initiated by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) on Friday, September 25, 2026.

However, the group expressed disappointment that the 2012–2015 legacy arrears were not included among the issues being pursued by the unions.

In a statement issued on Sunday, September 27, the association said the arrears had remained outstanding for years and deserved attention alongside other financial and welfare concerns affecting teachers.

“We believe that all legitimate arrears owed to teachers deserve equal attention, regardless of the category,” the association said.

The affected teachers appealed to GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG to table the matter in their engagements with the government as the unions negotiate for improved conditions for teachers.

The association said teachers affected by the legacy arrears were prepared to support the ongoing industrial action but wanted their long-standing grievance to be formally recognised and pursued.

“We appeal to our union leaders to add the 2012–2015 legacy arrears to the issues being negotiated with government and help bring this matter to a lasting resolution,” the statement said.
