A group of former Municipal and District Chief Executives who served under the first term of ex-President Akufo-Addo is demanding payment of terminal benefits it says remain outstanding since 2021.
In a letter dated October 2, 2026, addressed to Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, former Akatsi South MCE Leo-Nelson Adzidogah wrote on behalf of the affected former MMDCEs (Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives), who served from 2017 to 2021.
According to the letter, at the start of Akufo-Addo's second term, first-term MMDCEs were instructed to remain in office pending new nominations. New nominations were made in October 2021, and 134 MMDCEs were not renominated for the second term.
The letter states that these former MMDCEs pursued their claim for terminal benefits but were not paid, on the assumption that payment would follow once their successors were also settled. It says their successors were subsequently paid, while they were left out.
The letter argues that colleagues who were renominated were paid for the same period the former MMDCEs also served, from January to October 2021. "It is therefore unfair to leave us out while our colleagues who worked with us during the said period were paid," the letter states.
It adds: "We humbly believe that our exit from office during and before the end of the second term should not be used to deny us of our benefits. This is clearly an oversight."
The letter appeals to the Finance Minister "to take a due consideration of this situation and authorize the payment of our benefits."
The letter was copied to the Deputy Minister of Finance. The Ministry of Finance has not yet publicly responded to the demand.
