Baffour Awuah describes EOCO custody attempt as "clear act of provocation"

Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has described an alleged attempt by an EOCO official to take him into custody outside the Accra High Court as provocation.

The incident happened on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, shortly after Baffour Awuah represented Salomey Awitty Baffoe in court. Baffoe, whom prosecutors have linked to the operator of the Ghana Jollof TikTok account, was remanded by the court in proceedings the MP is now contesting.

According to Baffour Awuah, a woman who identified herself as an official of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) told him he was required at the agency's office. He said he asked her to identify herself and explain the reason, but she failed to produce identification.

The MP said he offered to follow her to the EOCO office in his own vehicle, but she insisted on taking him with her and allegedly held his hand. He said the confrontation continued as he tried to get into his Toyota Land Cruiser, with the official reportedly blocking his way before eventually stepping aside, allowing him to drive off.

Speaking in an interview with Eyewitness News on Thursday, September 24, Baffour Awuah said the official's conduct amounted to provocation.

"Clearly, she was there to provoke me because at that point, you don't have an ID card that shows you are from EOCO," he said. "You are also there aggressively to take me. It was a clear act of provocation, which, with the greatest of respect and the help of God, I was able to withstand."

He defended his refusal to comply without proof of the official's identity. "If you were ever confronted by somebody, regardless of gender, and told you were needed by a state security agency, and you asked the person, 'Where is your ID? What shows you are coming from that place,' and the person fails to produce any sign about that, would you take that person seriously?" he asked.

Baffour Awuah is pursuing legal options over the court's decision to remand his client, including an appeal and a possible application for bail pending the appeal.
