The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed all senior high schools (SHS) and senior high technical schools (SHTS) to stop refusing admission or denying boarding accommodation to newly admitted students solely because they arrive with metal trunks, wooden chop boxes or other personal storage containers.
In a circular signed by Deputy Director‑General, Prof Smile Dzisi, on behalf of the Director‑General, GES said reports indicate some schools have been turning away students or imposing specific container requirements that place unnecessary financial burdens on parents and guardians.
The directive instructs Regional Directors to inform heads of schools to accommodate all duly admitted boarders without discrimination based on the type or brand of personal storage items, provided the items are reasonably sized, safe and do not pose health or safety risks to other students.
GES further ordered that any case of a student being denied accommodation for this reason be investigated and reported to Management. Heads of schools found to flout the directive, the statement warned, will face action in accordance with the Service’s regulations and laws.
The Service said it counts on the cooperation of school leaders to ensure fair treatment of students and to prevent additional costs for families during admissions.
