The Tema Regional Police Command, through its Marine Police Detachment at Ada, has intercepted a wooden canoe carrying 2,213 slabs of suspected Indian hemp on the River Volta.
According to a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, ASP Dede Dzakpasu, officers conducting a routine patrol at about 12:45 a.m. encountered the outboard-powered canoe near Tuanikopey Island.
On sighting police, the occupants abandoned the vessel and fled. A search of the canoe uncovered twenty-nine sacks containing the dried leaf substance, tightly wrapped in yellow cellotape.
The police said investigators also recovered fourteen 25‑litre gallons, twelve of which contained pre‑mixed fuel and two Yamaha outboard motors (one 40HP and one 30HP).
The suspected narcotics were transported to the Ada District Police Headquarters, and arrangements are being made to move the motors and fuel to the station for further examination.
The Tema Command said efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those who abandoned the canoe.
The police urged the public not to engage in narcotics trafficking and asked anyone with information on the owners or occupants of the canoe to report to the nearest station to assist with the investigation.
