Effiduase-Asokore MP Dr Nana Ayew Afriye has sued Rev Isaac Owusu Bempah for GH¢10 million over alleged defamatory statements concerning an alleged plot to attack the pastor’s church.
Dr Ayew Afriye filed the suit at the High Court in Accra, challenging statements he says Rev Owusu Bempah made during a church service on September 6, 2026, and which were subsequently circulated on social media.
According to the MP’s statement of claim, Rev Owusu Bempah allegedly accused him and other figures associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of planning to mobilise people from the Ashanti Region to attack his church.
Dr Ayew Afriye denies the allegation, maintaining that he has never conspired with anyone or organised an attack against Rev Owusu Bempah or his church. He argues that the statements have damaged his reputation as a medical practitioner, legislator and public figure.
The MP further claims that the alleged remarks, amplified through social media, have caused him embarrassment and could affect his political standing in the Effiduase-Asokore constituency.
The legal action follows an earlier public demand by Dr Ayew Afriye for Rev Owusu Bempah to retract the allegations and apologise if he could not substantiate them. Reports indicate that the pastor subsequently indicated his readiness to face the matter in court.
Dr Ayew Afriye is asking the court to declare the statements defamatory and award him GH¢10 million in damages.
He is also seeking an order compelling Rev Owusu Bempah and the other defendant to issue an unqualified retraction and apology on the platforms where the alleged statements were published.
In addition, the MP wants a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from making or causing similar statements against him in the future, as well as costs, including legal fees. The writ was filed on September 11, 2026, by Ohene Gyan & Associates on his behalf.
