Ghana, Barbados deepen talks on trade, aviation and security

By: Emmanuel Bekoe

Ghana and Barbados are seeking to deepen bilateral cooperation in aviation, tourism, trade, education, migration and security following high-level diplomatic talks in Abuja.

Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E Baba Sadik, said he received Barbados’ High Commissioner to Ghana and concurrently accredited to Nigeria, H.E. Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, at the Ghana High Commission in Abuja.

The meeting focused on strengthening existing Ghana-Barbados relations and translating their shared historical and cultural ties into practical areas of cooperation.

According to Baba Sadik, the discussions covered aviation and connectivity, tourism, trade and investment, education, culture, migration and security, as well as reparations and multilateral affairs.

The engagement follows recent high-level activities involving Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley in Ghana, which the ambassador said had contributed to growing momentum in relations between the two countries.

Baba Sadik said the two nations' historical links provide a foundation for expanding collaboration between their peoples.“Our task now is to translate that shared heritage into practical partnerships that connect our people, unlock opportunities and strengthen Africa–Caribbean relations,” he said.

The talks also highlighted areas with potential to improve connectivity and economic exchanges, particularly through aviation, tourism, trade and investment.

Ghana and Barbados maintain longstanding historical and cultural connections rooted in the transatlantic experience. Both countries have increasingly emphasised stronger Africa-Caribbean engagement as part of efforts to build closer economic, cultural and diplomatic ties.

The Abuja meeting therefore adds to ongoing efforts to move Ghana-Barbados relations beyond shared heritage towards practical cooperation with benefits for citizens and businesses in both countries.
