Wontumi campaign team backs John Boadu for NPP national chairmanship

By: The Observer Times

The campaign team of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has ended its independent bid for the NPP National Chairmanship and endorsed John Boadu.

The decision was announced by campaign administrator Denise Okyere Danso at a press conference on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following consultations with grassroots members, party elders and other stakeholders.

Mr Danso said the team would deploy its grassroots network and organisational structures to support Mr Boadu, combining Wontumi’s mobilisation strength with Boadu’s experience in party administration. “The Wontumi Campaign has taken the decision to close ranks and throw its full weight, organisational capacity and grassroots machinery behind Mr John Boadu,” he said.

The endorsement followed a September 4 visit to Chairman Wontumi at Nsawam, where he is serving a 20-year prison sentence over an illegal mining conviction.

Mr Danso said the alliance was aimed at strengthening the NPP ahead of the 2028 general election, stressing that the party’s interests must come before individual ambitions. “This is bigger than two campaigns. It is about putting the party above individual interests and ensuring that the NPP emerges stronger, more united and better organised,” he said.

He subsequently directed Wontumi’s regional, constituency and polling-station coordinators to support Mr Boadu and urged all candidates and supporters to pursue the internal contest with “unity without bitterness”.

The campaign team said the alliance would help consolidate the NPP’s grassroots support and strengthen preparations to return the party to government in 2028 under presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
