The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has expressed disappointment over the pervasive financial and operational inefficiencies crippling Ghana's public waste management systems.
During his first official working visit to the Northern Region on Sunday, September 6,2026, Hon. Ayariga sharply criticised the mismanagement of public funds while inspecting the Gbalahi landfill site in the Tamale Metropolitan Area, calling for an immediate overhaul of how state resources are utilised to manage public sanitation.
"I really feel offended when I see that you're just throwing the money away. Our country's problem is not lack of resources; it is the way we inefficiently manage almost everything," Hon. Ayariga declared.
Hon. Ayariga noted that Ghana's developmental challenges stem not from a scarcity of funds, but from a systemic absence of financial discipline and oversight.
He stressed that the government can no longer afford to absorb massive, unproductive financial burdens caused by poorly executed public systems.
The Minister's inspection of the Gbalahi site forms part of a broader mandate to identify practical, cost-effective alternatives to optimise waste operations across the country.
He emphasised that municipal authorities must adopt stricter management protocols and leverage sustainable approaches to ensure taxpayers get true value for every cedi spent.
