Ahwenepa 95.5 FM journalist Richard Nana Basoah, popularly known as “Papa Rich,” has been released after National Security authorities took him into custody, sparking concerns over his whereabouts.

Joyken Platinum Company Ltd., operators of Ahwenepa 95.5 FM, confirmed in a statement that Mr Basoah was released after interventions from party leaders, legal representatives and other stakeholders.

The incident leading to his detention occurred on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, shortly after Mr Basoah had ended his evening drive-time programme at the station’s premises in Juaso, Asante Akim South, in the Ashanti Region.

Earlier reports from the station indicated that two black Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles arrived at the station around 6:20 p.m., after which a group of armed men reportedly approached the broadcaster and took him away.

Eyewitness accounts cited by the company suggested that the men claimed they were taking Mr Basoah to “National” to answer questions over statements he had allegedly published. It was later established that the officers involved were operatives of the National Signals Bureau (NSB).

Mr Basoah, who also serves as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Officer for the Asante Akim South Constituency, had triggered concerns from his employers, colleagues, the party and family members following the uncertainty surrounding his whereabouts after his detention.

The NPP Asante Akim South Constituency Communications Directorate had earlier confirmed reports that its Communications Officer had been picked up and said it was engaging relevant authorities and the family to establish the facts.

His release followed interventions by NPP leadership, Prof. Lawyer Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah and Mrs Joyce Attafuah, Directors of Ahwenepa 95.5 FM, former Ghana Post Managing Director Bice Osei Kuffour (Obour), Lawyer Enoch Afoakwa, and other individuals who worked to ensure due process.

Ahwenepa FM said Mr Basoah is expected to report to the National Signals Bureau on Thursday, 6 August 2026, accompanied by his legal team led by Prof. Lawyer Ken Attafuah and Lawyer Enoch Afoakwa, to cooperate with ongoing processes.

The station expressed appreciation to all persons who offered support and reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, lawful investigative procedures, media freedom and the protection of constitutional rights.
