Students beat headmaster, vandalise Obuasi SHS after alleged discovery of buried infant

Tensions remain high at Obuasi Senior High Technical School after a group of students attacked the headmaster and damaged school property following claims that a newborn was buried on campus.

Headmaster Abdullai Zakari suffered multiple injuries in the assault and is receiving treatment at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

According to the students, the incident occurred between about 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. when one pupil spotted the headmaster’s vehicle near the school refuse dump and raised the alarm. Other students say they then uncovered what they believed to be the body of a baby, estimated at five to six months old, and accused the headmaster of burying it.

The students confronted and beat Mr. Zakari. Police later arrived, exhumed the body and transported it to the morgue as they launched an investigation.

The police officers also moved to prevent further destruction, but some pupils still ransacked items in the headmaster’s bungalow.

First-year students were reportedly attacked by seniors who accused them of siding with the headmaster.

Municipal security officials, led by Faustilove Appiah Kannin, and senior police officers visited the school to restore calm.

Obuasi Municipal Police Commander Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu promised students increased protection while investigations continue. Six people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
