The Ghana Education Service says Ghanaian languages will become the main medium of instruction from Kindergarten to Primary Three under a revised basic school curriculum.

In a statement signed by the Ministry of Education’s Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, on Sunday, 2 August 2026, the GES said the policy will apply from Kindergarten to Primary Three.

The Service explained that the move is aimed at improving foundational literacy, numeracy, critical thinking and cognitive development by allowing children to learn in languages they understand best during their formative years.

From Primary Four to Primary Six, the GES said both Ghanaian languages and English will be used as part of a bilingual approach designed to support a gradual transition to higher levels of education, where English plays a more dominant role.

The Service added that the approach will help pupils maintain proficiency in Ghanaian languages while building confidence in English communication.

The GES also clarified that foreign languages, including French, Arabic and Chinese, will not be compulsory subjects under the revised curriculum. Instead, they will be offered as optional courses for pupils who wish to develop additional language skills, subject to the availability of teachers and learning materials.

“The Ministry further clarifies that foreign languages such as French, Arabic, and Chinese among others are not compulsory subjects. They will be offered as optional languages for pupils who wish to acquire additional language skills,” the statement said.

The GES urged parents, teachers, school authorities and the media to disregard claims that foreign languages have been made mandatory, stressing that such information is inaccurate.

According to the Service, the policy reflects international best practices and supports Ghana’s efforts to improve learning outcomes while preserving the country’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
