Government has accepted a recommendation to extend the tenure of the President and Parliament from four to five years, following the Constitution Review Committee’s report.
The decision was announced on Thursday, 30 July 2026, after the government received and considered the final report of the Constitution Review Committee.
The proposed extension is aimed at giving elected governments additional time to implement policies, strengthen continuity in governance, and improve long-term development planning.
The Constitution Review Committee recommended the five-year term, arguing that a longer tenure would reduce the frequency of general elections, lower electoral costs, and allow administrations to focus more effectively on strategic national projects without the immediate pressure of another election cycle.
The recommendation forms part of broader constitutional reform proposals submitted by the Committee following its review of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
Government’s acceptance of the proposal means it will now move into the next stages of the constitutional amendment process, including consultations with relevant stakeholders and consideration by Parliament.
The extension will only take effect if the required constitutional procedures, including parliamentary approval and any other mandatory processes, are completed.
