"We predicted it" — Baffour Awuah reacts to Appeal Court ruling in Sedinam Tamakloe case

NPP's spokesperson on Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has reacted to the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer Sedinam Christine Tamakloe Attionu, describing the development as a confirmation of the party’s earlier concerns.

Speaking to journalists after the ruling, the Manhyia South Member of Parliament said the outcome followed a sequence of events the NPP had anticipated.

“We predicted it. The sequence as we predicted has played out exactly as we predicted,” Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah said.

He argued that the decision represented what he described as evidence that the governing NDC “reset” agenda was primarily aimed at benefiting the party. He said the development had vindicated concerns raised by the NPP since the change of government.

Awuah used the opportunity to appeal to middle-class Ghanaians, civil society organisations and former NPP supporters who backed the NDC in the 2024 general election to reconsider their political allegiance and return to the party.

“The NPP remains your home. We may have committed certain errors at some point, but together we can correct all our wrongs and remain the party of choice that meets your aspirations,” he said.

The MP acknowledged that the NPP had made mistakes while in government but maintained that the party had the capacity to reform and address its shortcomings. He, however, criticised the NDC, alleging that the party had not changed from its historical approach to governance.

Awuah also questioned the timing of the Court of Appeal’s ruling, alleging that it coincided with the government’s release of the White Paper on Constitutional Review. He claimed the development was part of a broader political strategy to influence public attention.

“What the NDC is doing is very calculated, and nobody seems to be paying attention. This whole thing is a sequence. They planned the date for the judgment such that it will meet the issuance of the presidential White Paper on the Constitutional Review,” Awuah alleged.

Commenting on Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine’s decision to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court, Awuah said the planned appeal followed public reaction to the judgment, particularly from some civil society actors and individuals who had supported the NDC.

Background

The Court of Appeal on Thursday, 30 July 2026 overturned Tamakloe Attionu’s 2022 conviction and 10-year prison sentence after finding that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against her beyond reasonable doubt. In its 94-page judgment, the court also held that the trial judge failed to properly apply the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence.

Tamakloe Attionu, who served as MASLOC CEO from November 2013 to January 2017, was convicted in absentia in 2022 after she failed to return from an approved medical trip abroad. She had faced 78 charges, including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering and procurement breaches linked to alleged offences between 2013 and 2016. She was extradited from the United States to Ghana on 9 June 2026 before her legal team successfully challenged the conviction, leading to her acquittal on all counts.
